Raksha Bandan is celebrated on the full moon day as per the Hindu calendar in the month of Shravan and is an extremely popular festival in India. It is a festival that symbolizes the sacred relationship between a brother and a sister. The festival Raksha Bandhan in fact means a “protective bond” when translated from Hindi to English signifying the bond of love out which comes sense of security and protection. The festival is celebrated by the sister tying a Rakhi ( a sacred thread ) on the wrist of the brother by performing a small Aarti ceremony. The brother in return gives her a gift. This ritual signifies their love for each other. The trends have changed a little bit now though and the festival is not only celebrated by immediate brother and sister however it is also celebrated between friends who have a strong and brother – sister kind of relationship.
There are several beliefs regarding the origin of Raksha Bandhan. One such belief is that it hails from the time of the Mahabharata. It is considered that once Lord Krishna hurt his hand while fighting and then Draupadi, the wife of the Pandava brothers rushed to his aid by covering the wound by a piece of her sari and tying it around Lord Krishna’s hand. Lord Krishna thus grateful for the help offered Draupadi help whenever she needed any. In the later days to come Draupadi was in dire need of help when the Kauravas were trying to disrobe her and was helped by Lord Krishna thus saving her from being dishonored.
Thus Raksha Bandhan has been celebrated since a long time ago. With the turn of the century however the method in which Raksha Bandhan is celebrated has undergone a few changes as well. These days it is a common sight for the markets to be decorated with flowers and lights during Raksha Bandhan selling many different kinds of Rakhis ranging from a simple thread to a fancy designer Rakhi. The sweet shops are also decorated since it is a custom to exchange sweets as well during this festive season. In addition to that it is also quite common that both the brother and the sister do not stay in the same country. Thus for example it is quite common for sister to send Rakhi India from USA. This has been made possible via online Rakhi Super Stores like Rakhi Superstore.com.
